This award, inspired by Al Sanford's excellence in modeling and good sense of humor, is presented to the NENY member whose work is voted to be the best model exhibited at the chapter's August meeting each year. The winner will take the cup home for the year and return it to the site of the next year's August meeting.

  1. Only regular members of the NENY Chapter may enter, judge, and vote. For purposes of this award "regular member" is defined as anyone who has attended at least one chapter meeting during the previous year.
  2. Each person may only enter ONE MODEL. The model must have been COMPLETED during the previous year. Models that were started, put back, shelved, taken out again, etc…in ages past are acceptable, as long as they were completed in the last year. The honors system will apply, but remember, modelers have long memories!
  3. Entries can be any modeling related subject (i.e. aircraft, ships, cars, armor, figures, dioramas, skinless projects, etc.)
  4. Regular members who are unable to attend the August meeting may enter a model in absentia, but obviously forfeit their right to vote.
  5. All regular members attending the August meeting, whether entered in the contest or not, are eligible to judge and vote.
  6. Exact judging criteria will be left to each judge's taste, style, impressions, etc. (I.e. "It just looks really neat…" is an acceptable reason.). Minimal handling of the entries should be expected, but please try not to break anything!
  7. Each judge will select one entry for the award. There are no runners-up, although the Most Congenial Modeler Award may be considered if any congenial modelers can be found. Each judge will have one vote and they may not vote for their own model. A confidential paper ballot system will be used and results will be tabulated by "the most honest looking person(s) that can be found at the time". The entry with the most votes wins. In the event of a tie a run-off election will be conducted according to the rules above.
  8. Immediately after the results of the voting are announced, the winner will be REQUIRED to graciously serve one beverage or food item from the on-hand menu to each member present at the meeting as per their request. The winner should be prepared for some abject humiliation, but nothing beyond the limits of human decency.
  9. The Sanford Cup may not be awarded to the same modeler in consecutive years.
  10. All requests for rules interpretation will be presented by the supplicant to the assembled members prior to the start of judging. A fair and open-minded debate shall take place, followed by a vote on the ruling, which will undoubtedly represent the collective wisdom of the group.
  11. Attendance at the August meeting and participation in the contest in any capacity will carry with it the implicit assumption that your primary goal is to have fun and not to "take this contest thing too seriously"!
